New post. “Master herbalist” convicted of practicing medicine without a license in death of 13-year-old

Here is my latest post on Physician's Weekly. It's the sad story of a “master herbalist” who convinced a mother to treat her newly diagnosed diabetic son with herbs instead of insulin. He was convicted of practicing medicine without a license, a misdemeanor and was sentenced to only 4 months in jail.

Happened quite close to our town. I think the mother should have been held culpable as well. She said he mesmerized her, I can't believe that. So sad the son had to pay the price.

Yes, I was conflicted about the mother. I can understand she might have been brainwashed, but it would be hard to prove. There's a case in Canada where the parents were convicted of neglect for treating their now deceased child's meningitis with natural remedies. It was overturned and a new trial is planned. No outsiders were involved. The father runs an herbal supplement company.
