Let's Play "What's My Premium?"

In case you think that the malpractice crisis in the United States is not a factor driving up medical costs, take a look at this. From the website of the Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company of New York is a list of selected specialties and the current yearly cost of a policy.

The Bronx was the long time leader in high plaintiffs’ verdicts, but Long Island has now taken the top spot. If you would like to check out other specialties and locations in New York State, you can do so by clicking here.

Now I really want to go into ophtho or ENT ... surgery + $30k/yr malpractice (ophtho ... ENT is $100k) = win

I don't blame you. I don't see how anyone can make a living in some of these specialties.

That is beyond shocking. And I have to admit, I am surprised by the highest one being neurosurg...

These premiums have been like this for years, no one realizes how much it makes practice so difficult. As I mentioned on twitter, my PCP got a check for 37. and my co pay of 20. for my yearly exam, I am embarrassed.
I spend 57 in the nail salon as do most people...
I would gladly pay the full amount that would make it worthwhile for my PCP once a year, come on....
As I mentioned to you, I stopped practicing Chinese Medicine when my last check from Blue Cross Blue Shield was 14.17 for an hours' work.
Forget my malpractice insurance which was only several thousand a year , my monthly premium for health care from BC/BS because I was self employed was $800.
Does anyone wonder why it feels docs get us in and out like an assembly line.
With my 14.17 per hour, I was to pay a secretary and the rest of my overhead. My best year after 7 years I actually made $18,000...

Great comment, Maureen. Don't forget about the patients who can't pay but have iPhones.
